Mayor Michael D. Tubbs, along with the Economic Security Project, founded Mayors for a Guaranteed Income in June 2020 after the success of the SEED project in Stockton, CA. The goal of MGI is to build a network of Mayors who advocate for a guaranteed income, to ensure that all Americans have an income floor.
“In Stockton, we found that giving folks agency and dignity to manage their needs with cash is the most straightforward way to address poverty, inequity and emergency of the personal and pandemic proportion,” said Stockton Mayor Michael D. Tubbs
Beyond attracting widespread attention to the success of the SEED project (of which is featured in an HBO documentary) the Mayors for a Guaranteed Income initiative has already received the support of over 50 mayors across the U.S with several pilot programs already in the works.
Initially, people disparaged the guaranteed income programs, saying that people would not want to work or that people would use the money on drugs and alcohol.
The results of past guaranteed income projects now show that is not the case, furthermore, popularity for the programs have increased as they provide a "policy antidote" to poverty and rising income and wealth inequality.
New pilot programs are being announced, follow the official Twitter account @mayorsforagi for the latest updates on the Mayors for a Guaranteed Income initiative.
